National Institute for Minamata Disease
The National Institute for Minamata Disease (NIMD) was established in October of 1978 in Minamata City, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, with the purpose of conducting comprehensive medical research to improve medical treatment for victims of Minamata Disease while giving balanced consideration to its deep historical background and social importance.
Message from MINAMATA
About 60 years ago, the disease broke out in a Japan and it shocked the whole world. It was Minamata disease, which said in Japan to be the first case of environmental pollution. At that time a strange disease of unknown cause had been feared by the local people.
The damage caused by Minamata disease was the most severe during the postwar reconstruction and high economic growth periods. Richness and convenience were pursued and profit and efficiency were prioritized over the environment, human lives and health of people. In the end, their attitudes proved to be harmful both to humanity and to the economy. And this failure could happen anywhere in the world which aims solely for economic development.
We would like to tell the history and lessons of Minamata disease as our message to the whole world along with our pledge to all the lives who were sacrificed, ”We will never repeat the same fault.”
Brooks Rand Instruments
Designs, manufactures, and sells the most sensitive and advanced mercury analysis and speciation systems and has been at the forefront of mercury analytical methodology and instrumentation since the 1980s, and was later involved with the EPA’s drafting and verification of methods 1630, 1631 and 245.7.
